Expression Number: How you show up
Calculated from every letter of your full birth name. The number that describes how you naturally present yourself — your operating system.
What the Expression number is
The Expression number — sometimes called the Destiny number — is the second of the five core figures in a Pythagorean chart. Where the Life Path describes the road you are on, the Expression describes the vehicle you are driving. It is the natural configuration of talents, instincts and ways of moving that you brought with you.
It is calculated from the full name on your original birth certificate — first, any middle, last. Not your married name. Not your stage name. Not the name your friends use. The tradition holds that the name attached to you at the moment of arrival is the one that maps to the chart.
If your name has changed since birth and the new name has become your primary identity, some numerologists will calculate a second Expression on the current name and read both. That is fine. The birth-certificate version remains the reference.
The Pythagorean letter table and a worked example
Every letter has a value from 1 to 9. The table goes: A J S = 1; B K T = 2; C L U = 3; D M V = 4; E N W = 5; F O X = 6; G P Y = 7; H Q Z = 8; I R = 9. Memorise the column heads (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I) and the rest follows.
Worked example. Take the name Sarah Jane Cooper. S=1, A=1, R=9, A=1, H=8 — Sarah sums to 20. J=1, A=1, N=5, E=5 — Jane sums to 12. C=3, O=6, O=6, P=7, E=5, R=9 — Cooper sums to 36. Total: 20+12+36 = 68. Reduce: 6+8 = 14, 1+4 = 5. Sarah Jane Cooper's Expression number is 5 — a versatile, restless, communicative operator. Watch for 11, 22 or 33 at any reduction step; if you land on one, you stop there.
Two practical notes. Hyphens and apostrophes do not count. Ignore titles, suffixes (Jr., III) and accents — in the Pythagorean system, only the bare Latin letters carry a value.

Shows up as the humanitarian. Broad-minded, compassionate, idealistic. People sense the cause behind every move you make.
Master Expression numbers
An Expression of 11 reads as a heightened 2 — the messenger, with a public, slightly luminous quality to how you show up. People register you as carrying something to deliver. The cost is a nervous system that picks up too much; read the Master Number 11 page in full.
An Expression of 22 reads as a heightened 4. The builder configuration scaled up to institutions. People expect you to take on a problem larger than yourself — sometimes because they are happy to hand it to you. Read Master Number 22.
An Expression of 33 — rare — reads as a heightened 6. The teacher and healer configuration. People relax in your presence and tell you things they have not told anyone else. Read Master Number 33; treat the gift carefully.
