How to calculate it
Life Path is the sum of every digit in your birth date, reduced to a single number. Take Charlie Chaplin, born 16 April 1889. Write it out as digits: 1+6+4+1+8+8+9 = 37. Then 3+7 = 10. Then 1+0 = 1. A Life Path 1, which is the number of the founder — entirely consistent with a man who insisted on producing, directing, scoring and starring in his own films.
If your reduction lands on 11, 22 or 33 you stop — those are Master numbers and have their own pages. Otherwise you keep going until a single digit. There is no superstition in the arithmetic. The reading begins after the calculation is finished.
A note on calendar conventions: numerologists differ on whether to add the month, day and year separately and then combine, or add every digit in one pass. The result is almost always the same. We add every digit in one pass because it is faster to teach and harder to get wrong.
What the 1 is good at
Starting things. The 1 is the digit at the front of every other digit, and the personality at the front of every other personality. Ones can sit alone in a room with an idea and a deadline and produce something other people will applaud. They do not need a committee. They often resent the committee.
Conviction is the other gift. A 1 who has decided is difficult to budge — useful when the room is full of fence-sitters, less useful when the 1 is wrong. Most Life Path 1s have at some point been told, with affection, that they are the most stubborn person their friends have ever met. Most take the compliment.
When the 1 is at its best, it is the founder figure: clear-headed, original, slightly impatient with the way things have always been done. There is a reason so many of the people who built modern industries, modern films and modern political movements turn up with a 1 somewhere in the chart.

Where the 1 struggles
The ego is the standing problem. A healthy 1 has confidence; an unhealthy 1 has confidence and an audience. When the 1 starts to confuse being right with being deferred to, the people around them quietly start to drift. By the time the 1 notices, the room has emptied.
Loneliness is the other one. Ones often build something extraordinary and then look around and realise they did it alone, which was the point and also somehow not. The work matters and the bond did not get built in parallel. The fix is unglamorous: schedule the relationships the way you schedule the work.
Impatience is the third. A 1 with a good idea wants the idea to exist in the world by Tuesday. The discipline of waiting for other people to catch up — colleagues, partners, customers — is the discipline a 1 spends a lifetime acquiring. This is interpretive, not predictive. None of this is fate; all of it is tendency.
